Yoga & Mindfulness for Addiction Recovery

Supporting New Beginnings

 

A yoga and mindfulness course designed specifically for individuals who are in recovery from substance dependence or substance abuse. The “12 Steps” principles are incorporated into this course. If you have disordered eating or other addictive tendencies, this course may also be of interest to you.

Evidence based scientific research highlights the benefits of yoga and mindfulness as part of the recovery process. Inspired by Shaura Hall’s Minded Addicted Recovery Kit (MARK), Yoga & Mindfulness for Addiction Recovery is an additional therapeutic support tool to improve your well-being and your relationships following the completion of your initial recovery treatment. Our group structure will provide continued support, motivation and accountability.

By combining gentle yoga postures, breath work and mindfulness practices, we will discuss the physiological and psychological aspects of addiction and recovery.  Using scientific research, the aim of this course is to teach you how to rebalance your nervous system, teach you how to regulate your emotions and discuss how the yogic perspective can be applied to those affected by addiction. We will also discuss recovery strategies that can easily be incorporated into your daily life.

You will learn

  • gentle yoga postures that are both useful for energising and calming to your nervous system,

  • how to handle situations when you feel both comfortable and uncomfortable,

  • how to be with your emotions in a more gentle way, and

  • other various relaxation tools to calm yourself down when you feel overwhelmed.

Each week is themed so you can explore your yoga practice through different perspectives.

Each 2-hour session broadly follows the same structure

  • Yoga practice

  • Breath work

  • Group activity

  • Group discussion

  • Explanation of home yoga and mindfulness practices

Beginners and all levels of yoga and meditation are welcome 

You can work at your own pace in our supportive and non-judgmental environment so don’t worry if you have never practiced before. We will support you throughout the course. 

You will have an opportunity before each session for a private discussion if you have any questions or concerns regarding yoga, meditation or mindfulness.
